Active Release Technique

Hands-on, movement-based soft-tissue care.

Physiotherapy

In-office therapies alongside hands-on care.

Massage Therapy

One plan, built around you.

Every visit starts with understanding your situation. Once we know what is going on, your chiropractor may recommend a single approach or a combination. An adjustment can help with joint motion, Active Release Technique can address tight soft tissue nearby, and physiotherapy or massage can support your comfort between visits.

We will always explain why we recommend something. If a service is not likely to help you, we will not suggest it.

Chiropractic adjustments

What is chiropractic care? Chiropractic care focuses on the joints, muscles and nerves of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to assess how your body moves and to use hands-on techniques that support healthy motion.

What happens during an adjustment? An adjustment is a controlled, precise movement applied to a joint that is not moving as well as it should. Depending on what suits you, your chiropractor may use hands-on techniques, a drop table or a small handheld instrument for a gentler approach. You may hear a soft pop, which is simply gas releasing from the joint, or you may hear nothing at all. Both are normal.

How joint mobility is addressed. When a joint is stiff or restricted, nearby muscles often tighten to compensate. Adjustments aim to restore more natural movement, and your chiropractor may combine them with soft-tissue work, stretches or simple exercises to help the improvement hold.

Common reasons people visit

  • Low-back discomfort or stiffness
  • Neck pain and tightness, including from desk and screen work
  • Tension-type headaches
  • Upper-back and shoulder-blade tension
  • Hip, shoulder and other joint concerns
  • Stiffness that limits exercise, gardening or everyday activity

Your chiropractor will assess your situation and tell you honestly whether chiropractic care is likely to help.

What to expect

Adjustments are typically quick and comfortable. Some people feel loose right away, while others notice mild soreness for a day or so, much like after exercise. We check in with you at every visit and adjust our approach to your comfort level.

Active Release Technique (ART)

What is Active Release Technique? ART is a hands-on, movement-based method for soft tissue: muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and the nerves that run between them. It is designed to find and treat areas where tissue has become tight, restricted or less able to glide smoothly.

How does ART work? Your provider first finds the area that feels restricted, then applies firm, precise pressure while you move, or they move, that part of your body through a specific range of motion. Sessions are hands-on and active, and you are part of the movement.

What it focuses on. ART works with the soft tissues around joints, which is why it pairs well with chiropractic adjustments. Together, they let us look at both the joint and the tissue around it.

When is ART used?

  • Muscle tightness or knots that keep coming back
  • Tendon irritation from repetitive activity, such as gardening, typing, lifting or running
  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and foot concerns related to soft tissue
  • Reduced flexibility or range of motion after activity or a past strain
  • Soft-tissue tension that accompanies neck or back discomfort

Whether ART is right for you depends on your assessment. It is not the right tool for every situation, and we will tell you if something else fits better.

Our ART experience

Dr. Leslie Martin is an Active Release Technique provider with a full-body advanced certification. Dr. Robbi Long has also trained in Active Release Techniques.

What it feels like

ART involves firm pressure, so you may feel some discomfort during the movement. That should stay within what you are comfortable with, and we check in throughout. Mild soreness afterward is common and usually brief.

In-office physiotherapy

Alongside hands-on care, we offer several in-office therapies that may help ease discomfort, relax muscles and support your recovery. Your chiropractor recommends them only when they fit your situation.

Not sure whether a therapy is right for you? Ask at your next visit, and we will explain how it fits your plan.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation and Interferential Therapy

Small pads deliver a gentle current you feel as tingling or pulsing. Often used to help relax tight muscles and ease discomfort. Interferential therapy uses two crossing currents to reach a little deeper.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

A smooth handheld head glides over the skin with a light gel, sending sound waves into the soft tissue below. Most people feel little or nothing, sometimes mild warmth.

Laser Therapy

A low-level laser is applied to the area being treated. It is painless, usually quick, and used as part of a care plan to support comfort in muscles and joints.

Intersegmental Traction

You lie comfortably on a table with gentle rollers that move slowly along the spine. Many patients find it relaxing; it is often used before or after an adjustment.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy can be a helpful part of your care, or simply a welcome way to unwind. Our licensed massage therapists use hands-on techniques to ease muscle tension, support relaxation and help you feel more comfortable in your body.

Massage pairs well with chiropractic care. Relaxed muscles can make adjustments more comfortable, and regular massage can support how you feel between visits.

  • Swedish and relaxation massage
  • Deep tissue massage
  • Therapeutic, targeted massage

You do not need to know which service you need.

Most people do not come in asking for a specific technique. They come in because something hurts, feels stiff or is getting in the way of their life. That is exactly where we like to start.

Tell us what is going on. Your chiropractor will listen, assess your situation and explain which approach, or combination, is likely to help. If another type of provider would serve you better, we will tell you that too.

Most patients find adjustments comfortable. You may feel pressure and hear a soft pop. Some people feel mildly sore for a day afterward, similar to after a workout. Tell us anytime something feels uncomfortable and we will adjust our approach.
No. Massage generally works over larger areas to relax muscles. ART is more targeted: your provider applies precise pressure to a specific spot while that area moves through a set motion. Many patients benefit from both.
It depends on your situation, how long it has been going on and your goals. After your assessment, we will give you an honest recommendation and review your progress as we go. You are always free to ask questions or change your plan.
