Is Chiropractic Care Safe? Answers to Common Questions

Wondering whether chiropractic care is safe? Here are straightforward answers to common questions about adjustments, side effects and who should take extra care.

“Is chiropractic care safe?” is one of the most common questions new patients ask, and it is a good one. You should understand any care before you agree to it. This article answers common questions about safety, side effects and what makes care appropriate for you.

What the research generally says

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, spinal manipulation is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. As with any form of care, it is not risk-free, and it is not right for everyone. That is why a careful health history and assessment come first.

Common, mild side effects

The most common side effects are mild and short-lived. Some people notice:

  • Soreness or stiffness in the treated area for a day or so
  • Mild tiredness
  • A temporary headache

Many people compare this to how they feel after a new workout. Serious complications are rare, but your chiropractor should explain the risks and benefits of any recommended care so you can make an informed decision.

Why your health history matters

Before recommending any care, your chiropractor should ask about your medical history, medications, past injuries and current symptoms. Certain conditions, such as severe osteoporosis, some circulatory conditions, or certain spinal conditions, may mean that some techniques are not appropriate, or that another provider is a better first step. Be open about your health, and ask questions if you are unsure.

Gentle options

Not every adjustment involves a quick twist or a loud pop. Many chiropractors use gentler approaches when they suit the patient, such as a drop table or a small handheld instrument. Soft-tissue methods such as Active Release Technique and in-office therapies are other options. You can always tell your chiropractor what you are comfortable with.

What the “pop” is

The popping sound that sometimes happens during an adjustment is generally understood to be gas releasing from the fluid inside a joint as pressure changes, similar to cracking your knuckles. It does not mean a bone is moving in or out of place, and an adjustment can be effective whether or not you hear it.

When chiropractic care is not appropriate

A responsible chiropractor will refer you elsewhere if your symptoms suggest something outside their scope, such as signs of a fracture, infection, serious nerve involvement or another medical condition. Being told “this isn’t the right care for you right now” is a sign of a provider you can trust.

Questions to ask any chiropractor

  • What do you think is going on, and why?
  • What technique do you plan to use, and are there gentler alternatives?
  • What side effects should I watch for?
  • How will we know if care is helping?
  • When would you refer me to another provider?
